A Cowlendar alternative with flat pricing and POS included
Cowlendar is the most installed booking app on Shopify and for good reason: it is broad and fast to set up. Its pricing is based on your monthly booking revenue and, at the time of writing, its free plan stops at five bookings a month. Booking Slot charges a flat monthly fee by staff count, never on revenue, and keeps 20 bookings a month free.
Cowlendar and Booking Slot side by side
Competitor details are taken from public listings at the time of writing and can change. Always check the current App Store listing before deciding.

Why the pricing model matters more than the price
Comparing two booking apps on their headline monthly fee misses the thing that actually decides what you pay. Cowlendar's tiers are tied to the booking revenue flowing through the app, so your bill moves with your takings and you are promoted to the next tier automatically as you grow. Booking Slot charges a flat monthly fee based on how many staff or resources you run, and never takes a share of what you sell.
Neither model is dishonest. They suit different businesses. If your booking revenue is modest and steady, a revenue-linked tier can work out cheaper than a flat fee. If you are a salon doing thirty thousand a month through the chair, a percentage-shaped bill is an expensive way to buy a calendar, and the better month you have, the more it costs you.
The practical difference is predictability. A flat fee means the line on your Shopify invoice is the same in December as it was in February, which matters when you are the one doing the books.
Check both current listings before you decide. App Store pricing changes, and these pages are written at a point in time.
What happens when you hit the free plan limit
This is the detail that catches people out, and it is worth checking on any app you try, not just these two. A free plan is not really free if the booking widget disappears from your product pages the moment you pass its cap, because a product page with no picker and an add-to-cart button is worse than no app at all. The customer buys a service with no time attached, and you find out when they ring up asking when to come in.
Cowlendar's free tier has historically stopped at a small number of bookings a month, with the widget hidden beyond that. Check the current listing, as this has changed before.
Booking Slot's free plan allows twenty bookings a month. At twenty-one, the picker stays exactly where it is and shows a clear message that online booking is paused, so nobody can buy a service without a slot. Existing bookings are untouched. You upgrade when you are ready, not because your product pages have quietly broken.
Where Booking Slot is narrower, and where that helps
Cowlendar is the most installed booking app on Shopify and it covers a great deal of ground: appointments, multi-day rentals, subscriptions, upsells and a long list of integrations. That breadth is a genuine advantage if you need any of it.
Booking Slot does three things. Appointments, group classes, and staff bookings. It does not do multi-day rentals, booking subscriptions, waitlists or multi-location, and several of those are on the roadmap rather than in the product. If one of them is on your must-have list, Cowlendar is the better choice today and you should take it.
The trade is depth on the three things it does cover. Conflict checking, transactional holds, buffers and staff time off are on every plan including the free one, because those are correctness rather than features and charging for them makes no sense. Booking at the till uses the same engine as the storefront rather than a sync. Reminders include an SMS allowance instead of a per-message bill. And setup is a four-step checklist with presets, so a salon or a court gets sensible defaults without reading a manual.
- Flat monthly pricing, never a share of your booking revenue
- Twenty free bookings a month with the picker left in place
- POS booking included from thirty-nine ninety-nine, same engine as the storefront
- SMS allowance on every paid plan, top-ups when you need them
- Hosted in London, billed in pounds, supported from the UK
Switching without losing bookings
You do not have to do this in one go, and you should not. Install Booking Slot alongside Cowlendar and link one product to it, ideally a quiet service rather than your busiest. Take a test booking through checkout and watch it appear in the Calendar. Then move the rest a product at a time.
Leave Cowlendar installed until its last future booking has passed. The two apps only touch the same product if you link it in both, so as long as each product belongs to one app there is nothing to clash. Once the diary is clear on the old app, uninstall it.
Importing historic bookings is on the roadmap rather than available, which is the honest reason for the overlap period. If you have a large forward diary and want a hand with the product linking, email support and a person in Cheshire will answer.
Which one to pick
Choose Cowlendar if you need multi-day rentals, booking subscriptions, upsells or its integration list today, or if your booking volume is low enough that its revenue tiers come in under a flat fee.
Choose Booking Slot if you have a counter as well as a website, a team of staff on different hours, and a strong preference for knowing what the bill will be. And if what you actually want is an app that cannot sell the same slot twice, on any plan, that is the thing it was built around.
